The New Republic &c Blog - KERRY'S REPRIEVE ON TERRORISM: Mickey Kaus argues that the Al Qaeda attack in Spain may have already helped Bush--by elevating terrorism above jobs and health care as the major issue in the campaign.
Maybe. But given the high likelihood of a major Al Qaeda attack somewhere in the world between, say, Super Tuesday and November 2, surely it's better from Kerry's perspective that it happened sooner rather than later. That is, it's easy to envision Kerry having run primarily on jobs and health care until forced by events to change course. Had that course-changing event (i.e., an Al Qaeda attack) not happened till October, Kerry would have had no hope of retooling in time. Now he's got eight months to make sure he's got a credible antiterror message. That still might not be enough time. But at least it gives him a shot.
