Searle,

Re: Raymond, don't be in such a hurry to leave the internet.
Methinks your presence will still be required here.

Tonight I attend an Amnesty International meeting. The topic was depleted uranium (DU) and the tragic health effects that may or may not be attributable to DU.

Plenty of DU was used in the first Gulf War, and some are ascribing the 600% increase in birth defects in Basra to this munition. Additionally, an astounding 39% of Gulf War veterans have now been declared disabled by the Pentagon and the Veterans Affairs Department. That compares to 6.6% of WW II veterans, 5% of Korean War vets and 9.7% of Viet Nam War vets. Truly an astonishingly destructive combination of threats to human health were unleashed during the Gulf War I. Now, we find that the U.S. has used an order of magnitude more DU in the recent war than they did 12 years ago. This does not auger well for the health of Iraqis or the U.S. soldiers in the field.

Oh, and the point of all this? Without the Internet, the presenter of this lecture would have been nearly as uninformed as the American public in general about the facts of DU poisoning. Without the Internet, we'd all be members of the No-Nothing Party. This is why I'm becoming more and more convinced that efforts to stifle the liberties taken to provide information on the Internet will become a government agenda in the U.S., much as it has been the policy in China.
