GAWDALMIGHTY! I don't remember hearing that

I did a little Google search and here it is:

nydailynews.com

newsday.com

I am sure you can find more.

That's exactly what asbestos does- -prevents transmission of heat. (...) NASTY effects on human lungs, though, which is why it is now banned

OK, that was all probably before my time -g- I did study this stuff, you know. But there was no mention of asbestos in our "Strength" and "Structure" classes. The classical (and advised) method of protecting steel structures from the weakening effects of the fire is encasing it in concrete. There are also creative methods like organic coating etc, but we had no mention of asbestos.

This sort of variation can drive engineers crazy

Engineers who survive years of nonsensical calculations tend to be crazy upon graduation, anyway -g- Imagine taking a test where you are asked to calculate (to the second decimal point) the weight a particular slab in a particular structure can bear in particular conditions, AND THEN MULTIPLY the result by 3 (as a safety factor). Always made me wonder WTF all those calculations for, if you are to multiply the result by three anyway - just guess the weight you want it to carry!

I'll tell him to shake hands with you after we take Monaco. :-)

You think he will be able to shake hands (up and down) while making a no-no motion (right-left) with his head? -g-

Hey, I will be waiting on the beach with a frozen strawberry margarita in my hand. It's getting kind of hot down here. I got rosy cheeks and a grilled nose just from having lunch outside the other day :-)
