Bush's speech just now: NO MIDDLE GROUND he says. The world is either with him or on the side of terrorists. Basically that's his message and it is truly offensive. It's the same message he'll try to use against Kerry and democrats. That unless you're 100% behind the neocons and believe in good (GOP) vs. evil (Dems) you are a shameful person.

Of course there is a middle ground. We have negotiated our way out of the Libya situation. It took ten years but times change. Sure we have to kill active terrorists, but they're not all of one stripe and not all irrational. Maybe we could turn two factions against each other. The carrot may work sometimes to get them to surrender or turn on their own like informants do in criminal law.

And old terrorists do sometimes become statesman. I'm not even talking about Arafat. Terrorism is used by every resistence movement in history, including righteous ones. The Israelis were originally terrorists. So were the heros of our Revolutionary War though I'm not comparing them to Al Qaida.

Point being, there are middle grounds to find and that's where agreements are made. You kill adn apture as many as you can. That's the stick. Then you have the carrot. You have diplomacy. You express flexilibity. And of course we need to start getting off Arab oil which is the main problem. A complicated fight, not so simple as Bush says, and politically repugnant of him to brand anyone who isn't ideological as an appeaser of some sort. In fact, Bush's actions may cause more terrorism than they take away. The jury is out on that. And Bush certainly didn't stop them on 9-11, did he? Even though he was warned.
