JF, troops in Iraq has been a very sore issue for most Koreans. They elected Roh partly because he is more anti-American than his main opponent, Lee, but later on Roh capitulated on his campaign stance and agreed to send troops to Iraq in order to curry more favor from Bush. Issues like these may have caused his Millenium Democratic Party to split, when then led to his impeachment by both his former MDP allies and his traditional conservative opponents. By the way, South Korea has mandatory military service, if you didn't already know. It should be obvious why. That makes the sending of troops to Iraq even worse, since none of the troops volunteered to be sent to a foreign country. Why it took this long for Korea to "balk" is beyond me, and it's made even more unfortunate with the timing of the Madrid bombings and Zapatero's subsequent election. Tenchusatsu
