TC & All,

Problem solved... bad harddrive!!! But did have a little luck and learned something. Had noticed a soft "whining" sound from drive, but paid no attention to it. Opened cover and changed power plugs on harddrive to a spare and the computer booted... but with the soft whine (sounded like disks spinning faster and faster). Replaced harddrive and used disk image to transfer everything from the bad drive to the new one, ran a thorough scandisk and back in business. Thanks to all for their assistance.

Marty

edit: Patient of mine found the problem and suggested that the problem of not seeing the hard drives could be either a bad power supply or hard drive, but after hearing the soft whining noise he strongly suggested I replace the harddrive ASAP as the logic boards on harddrives often go bad sporadically and without notice. It turns out the original bad harddrive was one of those IBM Deskstars that gave so much trouble. I consider myself lucky in that I didn't have to do a complete reinstall. Thanks to all again.
