There's a lot that the congressional record does not say about the times and the undercurrents of these decades old votes you are waving saying that these prove that Kerry is weak on defense.

First the Vietnam war was all but over in 1972, and cutting defense after the war needs were no longer there would make sense.

The intelligence cuts were to cut out unneeded programs. Later in another bill these cuts were passed by congress.

The B2 was one of the most expensive military programs undertaken. This was the program that brought us the $200 hammer and the $500 toilet seats. A very controversial cold war weapon meant for delivering nuclear bombs. The B2 has found other roles now in the post cold war period and is a marvelous aircraft. But you need to understand the vote in the light of the times.

Many military cuts were opposed widely in the 70's through out the early 90's because they included base closures and defense jobs in member's districts. They are not always voted for on a need to have basis. Hawaii is highly dependant on military spending.

The next largest military budget in the world is not even 25% of the US military budget. I'm for a strong military, but I'm also a fiscal conservative. I want all money spent wisely...after all it's our money.

John McCain has publicly stated that Kerry is not weak on defense, because he understands the issues. You cannot parrot the RNC line, untill you look beyond the Rhetoric and see that Kerry is for a strong military. He's also for strong alliances. Strong alliances like NATO, and the UN have served this country well for generations. They ought not to be abandoned.

What needs to be looked at in detail is Bush's push for pre-emptive war based on faulty intelligence. There is no reason for diverting the resources needed against Al Qaeda to Iraq all the while thumbing your nose at our allies. It's just plain nuts.
