Thanks Tinker, now I get it.

This methodology of IPG advertising is also part of Gemstar's IP and TiVo now has full IPR per the settlement and licensing. The Showcase(s), as TiVo calls them, are to be shared with Gemstar. Although no split ratio was given I would be surprised if they are anything materially less than 50/50 as with the carriers. Instead if splitting the ad monies they partitioned the property in a sense. Some of the advertising you see on TiVo may actually be from Gemstar. This is my understanding.

Since TiVo provides its own data transmission (via telephone) for its retail products they are essentially a carrier. Gemstar does not receive a royalty from the TiVo DirecTV receivers because of the 'double dip' agreement with carriers. Using Comcast as an example ... IPG costs are not incurred by Scientific Atlanta or Motorola and passed on otherwise Comcast would be paying twice for the same IPG technology. This fee comes directly from DirecTV on a monthly basis.

Stew
