Gallop urges PM to help nickel project
19mar04
WESTERN Australian Premier Geoff Gallop has called on the federal government to help fund infrastructure needed to support a proposed billion-dollar nickel project.

BHP Billiton is expected to decide within days whether the $1.4 billion project will go ahead at Ravensthorpe, 540km south-east of Perth.

If it proceeds, the town of 2000 people will be boosted by the creation of 1000 jobs during construction, followed by 300 permanent jobs.

Dr Gallop said the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project had the potential to revitalise the region.

"The project would also yield significant spin-offs for businesses in the mining industry services sector, particularly in the Goldfields-Esperance sector," he said.

Dr Gallop said the state government had promised $18.4 million towards the provision of infrastructure and services needed to support the expected increase in population in the region.

In addition, $19 million has been pledged for project-related infrastructure at Esperance and $11 million for public sector housing in the region.

Dr Gallop today urged Prime Minister John Howard to also commit money to support the project, which would help Australia become a leader in developing technology to process lateritic nickel ore.

"I have again written to the prime minister inviting the commonwealth government to join the company and the state government in funding multi-user infrastructure for this region," Dr Gallop said.
