Last week, 22 people were killed in ethnic violence in Kosovo. This some 5 years after the UN took over Kosovo. It was just about a year ago, 4 years after the UN took over that the UN began to turn over the governance of the province to the Kosovars.

And Krugman wants the UN to take over in Iraq now? What UN model of success can Krugman point to that would justify such a move?

If anything, the change of heart by the Spanish government illustrates why the US should be in the lead and not relinquish it to the UN. The effort could not possibly withstand such tumult in the leadership.

I have no doubt that at some point the UN will become more involved in Iraq and even take the lead. I suspect that sometime this year a UN force will come in and supplement the US forces. The Spanish PM is under great pressure right now even from those who do not support the Iraq war effort and in the end, will find a way to stay as part of a UN contingent.

However, there is simply no history of UN success that justifies their takeover at this point in time.
