Loral is small potatoes now. 5 sats & a manufacturing facility. Satellite manufacturing has never been a great money maker. Lorals infrastructure (engineering, test) is a shambles. For the 10 years preceding my departure in 2002, the company had spent very little on new capital equipment. Most of the equipment is older than 10 years such as their Nearfield range, their Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR). Everything is old. Some of the test ranges are working with equipment that goes back to the Philco-Ford days. There were severe handicaps when I left, and I don't think it has gotten any better. Add to that the layoffs in engineering and you have a company that is in near-comatose condition. They have been bleeding for too long. If any of you smart business types see some major turn-around here I would like to see it.
