The unscripted moments that tell you the most about a candidate.

John Kerry went snowboarding yesterday, and collided with a Secret Service agent. The New York Times account: "When asked about the mishap a moment later, he said sharply 'I don't fall down,' then used an expletive to describe the agent who 'knocked me over.'"

Lovely. Kerry turns on the guy who will take bullets for him and torches him to the world, using another of Kerry's marvelous storehouse of barbs to add to the agent's problems. I am sure the collision was already bad news for the agent, but rather than come up from the fall trying to save the guy some grief at headquarters, Kerry's instinct was to blame and curse him. I am sure the military as well as the Secret Service relish the thought of working for this guy.

The Democrats have made their choice. And he's a world class jerk.

UPDATE: Not only a jerk, but a weak-on-defense jerk. Spend some time this weekend reading this AP Story on John Kerry's attempt to slash the defense budget in 1994. It was so radical that fellow Dems slammed it. (Hat tip to Captain's Quarters, which is running another fine caption-John-Kerry contest.) customwire.ap.org

UPDATE II: Not only a jerk, but a self-contradicting jerk in word and deed. Mr. "I don't fall down" fell down while snowboarding at least a half dozen times within sight of reporters today. Today he blamed the snow, not the Secret Service agent. No word yet on whether he cursed the mountain.

And ABC News found the tape of Kerry's September 14, 2003 Face The Nation appearance in which Kerry was asked if he would vote against the $87 billion if Kerry's preferred approach to paying for the troops did not pass, Kerry answered: "I don't think any United States senator is going to abandon our troops and recklessly leave Iraq to whatever follows as a result of simply cutting and running. That's irresponsible.

John Kerry's not going to be the president of the United States. And millions of Dems are figuring that out right now. Will they try to pull a Torch replay? Stay tuned. But I have to think Terry McAuliffe's busy on the phone to New York. Kerry has to think so as well. So do you think Kerry will try and replace McAuliffe before McAuliffe tries to replace Kerry?

There are a lot of Democratic senators out there who want to keep their jobs (Daschle, Boxer, reid, Murray), and a lot of Democrats who don't want to lose open seats in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Lousiana, not to mention all hope for 20 years of regaining a majority in the House. Kerry's falling down in far more ways on the slope. They notice. They call terry. They call Bill. Interesting days ahead.
