Looks like the beginning of the end, JJ.

Schroeder gives up SDP leadership
By Ray Furlong
BBC correspondent in Berlin

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has handed over the leadership of the Social Democratic Party, or SDP, at a special congress in Berlin.
The move, which does not affect his position as chancellor, comes amid criticism of his welfare reforms.

Mr Schroeder insisted his government would not change course as a result.

But as he spoke, a Greenpeace activist abseiled down from the ceiling of the conference hall with a banner protesting at government policies.

It was just one small sign of the huge wave of discontent with Mr Schroeder's government which has surged across Germany and into his own party.

Ambivalent end

Mr Schroeder is stepping down as leader due to anger within the party over welfare cuts, a freeze on pensions and the introduction of fees to visit the doctor.

But he will remain chancellor and Mr Schroeder insisted it would not lead to a change of government policy.

As he stressed the reforms were necessary, the applause was lukewarm.

But he did get a standing ovation at the end of his speech, perhaps in recognition of his two election victories for the party.

It is an ambivalent end to Mr Schroeder's five years as SDP leader, but ultimately most party members do seem glad to see him go.
