You're saying we should have FORCED the UN to accept protection? I don't think we could have done that. In addition:

1) The effort to force security on them would have been condemned by all the same infantile people who blamed the UN bombing on the US after the fact.

2) If any attack happened while we were providing security, the same infants would immediatly start screaming, "The US made them a target".
