I believe that Oracle does not want to purchase PSFT. I think they want to challenge the U.S. anti-trust system/laws to see how far they can go in acquiring companies. Also, it will establish a precendent for other companies with alot of cash (i.e., MSFT) when it comes to acquisitions.

For instance, I think if MSFT wanted to get into the enterprise applications business they would purchase SAP and PSFT and have a monopoly position as a result. After Oracle goes to trial we will know how far companies like MSFT can go. I think this is a good blocking technique for ORCL to do but it did cost $58 million last quarter to finance. That is about a penny of eps which would have put ORCL ahead of forecast. We are paying the price for that now but I think it is well worth the money in the long term.
