You are assuming China will act rationally. The issue of Taiwan being part of China is something that is ingrained in (mainland) Chinese from birth. Issues of the heart, so to speak, are often not acted on rationally. Many Taiwanese appear to be immensely worried China will have no choice but to attack if the ruling government continues to poke them with a stick. This doesn't worry you?
