A few bad actors were exposed in the process;

High growth, speculative periods tend to cause people to overleverage themselves and then when the tide turns they are stuck and the temptation for fraud presents itself. Worldcom was not *always* a fraudulent company, they committed fraud to cover up their demise due to overleverage. And Sam Waksal sold his imclone stock to avoid a margin call.
