I hadn't seen the Greenspan thing. I know the household survey is based on a sample, but so is the payroll. Still seems reasonable to have a measure which includes self-employed and contract employees.

Re. your monetary stimulus comments, what would higher interest rates do to employment? Hard to imagine and argument that that would increase employment.

Ignoring science? I don't see it. Re. alternative fuels and fossil fuels, I think we'll be dependent on fossil fuels a long time. A giant move now toward alternative energy would require major subsidies which would have big economic costs. I don't think a lack of science is holding up alternative fuels as economics. Fossil fuels are the most economic now. When that isn't the case, alternative energy will move ahead.
