I am also curious why a sponsor would choose to go to TiVo Showcase via GMST rather than going straight through TiVo.

They probably wouldn't if they wanted just the Showcase reach. The Showcase is a small part of Gemstar's advertising portfolio, maybe 2% at best, more likely less than 1%. It's just another platform Gemstar can offer along with cable, satellite and the consumer product platform; add to this TV Guide Online, Channel and Magazine.

I plan on consulting my buddy, Edgar, tonight to see if I can get some idea as to how many consumers purchase TiVo for the DVR aspects versus those that subscribe to the PVR service. I suspect that a good number of the DirecTV subs are taking advantage of the $99 hardware (give-away) promotion just so they can pause, rewind and fast-forward past commercials. It's being promoted as a DirecTV DVR with TiVo service. The TiVo service fee is reduced to 4.99/month or waived if you upgrade to a more expensive DirecTV programming package. With the TV Guide IPG in the DVR the viewer would essentially have the same functionality. You can press the remote once for recording and one-button again if you want this same program recorded whenever it airs.

The biggest problem I'd have as a consumer is the increasing amount of HDTV which really reduces the capacity by a magnitude of 10 or so. Another thing I'm also curious about is the degradation of the picture when viewed on replay. From all I've read, it's negligible on standard definition but is more evident with high definition. Puritans, like Mike, might take offence. :)

Stew
