China foray pays off for manufacturer
BEHLEN Manufacturing's joint venture with three Chinese companies, employing 180 people, is the first overseas operation for the privately owned company in Columbus, Nebraska.

Until the China factory opened last year, exports from Behlen's four American plants had brought in only 7 per cent of the company's US$140 million (S$237 million) in annual revenues.

Steel building frames had accounted for nearly half of the export revenue. Their production in Beijing for the China market eliminated 20 to 30 jobs in Nebraska, said Mr Anthony Raimondo, an executive of the company.

Behlen also exports prefabricated grain silos. Parts of these silos are being made in China and sales have risen, which means production has also risen for the portion made in Nebraska. Three or four workers have been added in its factory in Columbus.

To be sure, the net job loss remains at 20 to 30, and may rise as Behlen's Chinese customers are served increasingly from the new factory.

'The China market is so large, it justifies going there,' Mr Raimondo said.

'I even see us opening a second plant there. Every other market we can export to, but not China. We have to be there. I wouldn't call that export substitution.' -- New York Times
