When Tinker posted about the declining revenues from VCR Plus+ a few things came to mind. Almost all DVDRs in the market now contain VCR Plus+ and Gemstar and its CE licensees are marketing TV Guide On Line as the next generation VCR Plus+. The signals may no longer be represented as a series of digits and replaced with one-button record from the IPG GUI but the bulk of the methodology is still there. The majority of the claims within the dozens of patents issued for this method were for carriage, encoding, decoding, tuning, etc. There may also be some DRM potential here with these de facto standard program indentifiers. I've been patiently (like years) waiting for the V-Chip Plus+ technology to catch on. The Company was issued another patent in this area under their wholly owned subsidiary, Index Systems. Zenith carried it in a few TV models a few years back but that's been about it. I hope it gets some traction. Jackson (and I don't mean Reggie) might have perversely helped bring this theme of Parental Control back into the forefront. CEMs could capitalize on this with the proper marketing.
