TSA delays fingerprint checks to 2005
WASHINGTON, (March 22, 2004) -- The Transportation Security Administration announced it will not begin implementation of biometric background checks for hazmat drivers until January 2005, reports the American Trucking Associations.

The rule, which requires hazmat drivers to submit fingerprint information which will be collected and stored in a national database, has already been delayed since it was announced last May.

Last November, the TSA postponed the rule until April 2004, citing administrative, technical, and procedural challenges that must be overcome in deploying such a system. Individual states could have applied to further extend that deadline to Dec. 1, 2004.

TSA said it would spend the rest of this year finishing the infrastructure for the system, and hopes to be able to cross-reference suspected names in the database by 2005.
