I’m never going to be much impressed by an Ayn Rand quote, although I have to grant some grudging, if uncomprehending, respect to anyone capable of enduring her prose. It’s the sort of respect one has for people who walk to the South Pole, or across deserts. Reading Rand is an impressive act of endurance, but I can’t see why anyone would want to do it.

The “appeasement” charge is being used to shout down a good deal of legitimate dissent and necessary review of strategy and tactics in the war on terror. Personally, I think both hawks and doves are placing ideology above reason and barking up the blindest of alleys, but given the polarization of today’s political culture, that’s about what we can expect. It’s a serious mistake to assume that anyone who is unsatisfied with the way the war on terror is being fought is opposed to the war on terror or is trying to appease terrorists.
