Steven, The developed world spends far more in an effort to prevent developing countries from selling the only products they can competitively produce than it does in foreign aid. That's ridiculous, and it needs to stop. George Will wrote a great article on exactly this point a few weeks back. In it he noted our obscene subsidies for the sugar industry - and he directly showed how US manufacturing in the candy industry has moved thousands of jobs as a result of the high price. When the basic raw material is 90% cheaper in Canada or Mexico - its hard for US companies to ignore it. John
