Cisco adding intelligence to the Internet's core?

In last month's Business Communications Review, David Passmore made some interesting observations about how Intelligent Information Networking (IIN) runs contrary to the basic principles of end-to-endism.

In a commentary entitled "Are Smart Networks Dumb?", He cites Cisco's growing penchant for promoting a network architecture and creating network elements that are "application-aware" at the expense of flexibility and functionality for applications that are not taken into consideration.

Any Ciscoites or others out there who'd like to comment on this? All comments and/or corrections welcome.

Enjoy,
