How does this matter?

It matters because it shows that it is a weak argument in favor of a Saddam-Ansar al Islam link. The fundamental difference between the opponents came through eventually - just as there would have been a showdown at some stage between Saddam and al Qaeda if aQ would have managed to gain power in the Arab world quickly.
