It is entirely possible for AMD to have higher sales, and to pull a turkey out of a hat (in term of costs) and still have lower profits than Q4

Exactly my thoughts on why he commented on profits and not sales. If he had said, "we expect flat to slightly higher sales," everyone here would be predicting $0.25 and disappointed with $0.10.

Why would expenses be so much higher? My thoughts are
1) starting depreciation for 90 nm equipment
2) a lot more SOI equipment on 130 nm was used for the first time this quarter, since half of wafer starts in Q1 are K8. And just general expenses for switching from mostly K7 to mostly K8 before most of the K8s have been sold.
3) trying to pull Q2 expenses into Q1 so it won't have a loss (Q2 is definitely the lowest demand quarter seasonally)
