checked historical CPI
1975 has index at least 68% lower than year 2000

take $170 gasoline now
in 1975 terms, that is 52 cents

I lived thru that messy era
gasoline went from 35c to $1.30 quickly
we are now less than half the 1975 level in real terms

yup, we could double up to $75 per barrel
just to equal the 1975 price at the pump
