Zambia's January Copper Exports Rise 17 Percent From Year Ago

By Anthony Mukwita and Antony Sguazzin
March 23 (Bloomberg) -- Zambia, Africa's biggest copper
producer, said exports of the metal rose 17 percent in January
from a year earlier, without giving reasons for the increase.
Exports rose to 30,076 metric tons during the month, the
central bank said in a statement released in Lusaka, Zambia's
capital. Exports of cobalt, a metal used to make steel more
flexible, slumped 58 percent to 132 tons. Zambia, the Democratic
Republic of Congo and Russia are the world's biggest producers of
cobalt.
Zambia depends on the two metals for more than 80 percent of
its export income. Canada's First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is among
the companies that mine in the country.
