For the record, state government hiring was responsible for much of the paltry job creation in February, accounting for 20,000 of the 21,000 jobs created last month. States hardly have money to burn, however. According to Stateline.org (mostly rural) school systems in at least 12 states are tinkering with a shorter school week. They figure that by adding an hour each day and closing up on Friday they can save transportation and utilities costs.

According to today’s Wall Street Journal, prices for scrap steel have doubled in the past year. Higher prices are partly due to the higher costs of shipping the stuff from foreign sources. And there’s high demand outside the US besides. Non-scrap prices are also on the rise and squeezing the margins of companies producing products with the metal.
