It seems to me the only value of the dedicated wavelength circuit is in eliminating all this intermediate time/frequency multiplexing and protocol header processing decision-making (as well as the scarcity issues that reuse and multiplexing implies). If that is all brought back into the mix, then haven't we just come full-circle, except re-arranging which domain things are done in? At the end of the day, what was the big advance? Is the world a better place because we first sort by wavelength, then by time, then by frequency, rather than wavelength last?
