End-to-End BEA Platform Simplifies Change Management, Lowers IT Cost Structure, Speeds Time to Value for IT Projects biz.yahoo.com
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure software company, today announced that Covad Communications Group, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: COVD), a leading national broadband service provider, has signed an enterprise license agreement with BEA and plans to migrate its information technology (IT) infrastructure to BEA WebLogic Platform(TM) 8.1. Covad, whose broadband network passes 45 million homes and businesses, has been a long-time BEA customer, and has previous versions of BEA WebLogic Server(TM) running on more than 120 processors. Applications that are in production on BEA WebLogic Server include order management, order fulfillment and provisioning, inventory management, and trouble ticketing. Covad expects to go live with its first applications on BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1 in the first half of 2004.
"We've been using WebLogic since 1998," said Paul Grantham, vice president of software and information systems at Covad. "We've had a great experience with it, and we're excited to take the next step by adopting an end-to-end BEA infrastructure. It's time for us to standardize on one platform. We have multiple versions of WebLogic Server, including some that are six years old. By migrating onto BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1, we expect to improve change management, simplify operations, accelerate deployment and integration projects, and reduce our software licensing costs."
Covad is currently developing a number of solutions on several components of BEA's platform. BEA WebLogic Integration(TM) is replacing a previous integration software vendor and provides business process management (BPM) and e-bonding functionality. BEA WebLogic Portal(TM) is the foundation of a reseller portal under development. Covad is also adding Intel-based servers running the Linux operating system to its data center. Covad is using BEA WebLogic JRockit(TM) Java virtual machine (JVM) to optimize the performance and reliability of applications running on the Intel servers.
"Our vision for IT is to have an infrastructure that is based entirely on adaptable, open technology," said Grantham. "We want complete freedom to do what we need to do for the business. We believe that BEA, Intel and Linux can help take us in that direction. There are inherent cost savings with this approach and, more importantly, it makes us more agile and protects the investments we make today well into the future. The fact that we still have applications running fine on WebLogic Server 4.0 is proof that open solutions work for the long haul." |
