<Nothing about this program is "legitimate" - but I can understand why someone who considers Saddam "legitimate" might think so.>

You resort to misinformation to argue your point. Saddam was the recognized head of state of a sovereign nation -- that was the source and extent of his legitimacy.

The founder of Hamas was not a head of state, but rather was the "spiritual leader" of an organization that preaches and undertakes the killing of Jewish people in pursuit of the destruction of Israel. Is it a war between nations? Or is it Israel fighting terrorism? Hamas and many of its Arab supporters see it as the Palestinians fighting for their rights and for their own survival. In the Arab world, he was a legitimate leader.

Israel views it from exactly the opposite point of view -- an attempt to stop terrorism and a fight for their own survival. They see theirs as the only legitimate perspective. So we have a problem -- how will this war end? Hamas says it will end when Israel is destroyed and its Jewish citizens are dead or gone. Israel says the war will end when Hamas (and similar organizations) and its followers and supporters are dead and gone.

The escalation of violence by Israeli death squads targetting the "political leadership" of the Palestinians does nothing but reinforce the view that Israel is at the same level as Hamas -- the major differences now are merely who is better at doing the killing. Hamas uses low-tech suicide bombers. Israel uses planes, tanks, and helicopter gunships. Other than superiority of their weapons, Israel is now no better than Hamas. A plague on both your houses.
