I wholeheartedly agree with the general tone and commentary about the psychological professions' attitude. No, ADHD is not a disease.
The data is slowly trickling out, and I am personally convinced that - someday - it will be understood and recognized that ADHD and the various subset diagnoses are mostly manifestations of toxic heavy metal poisoning of the brain - specifically mercury poisoning.
The first indication is that ADHD and other similar disorders are closely related if not inclusive in the general category of autism specific disorders. The fact that the increased occurrence of autism is an epidemic is statistically undeniable and the diagnosis is not "qualitative." In the past decade the documented cases have increased by 400-500% nationwide. (it happened in the UK to so its not some fault of American culture) Autism was traditionally deemed a "genetic" disorder. If that is correct, the aforementioned increase is a statistical impossibility because the entire gene base of a nation cannot change in so short a span of time. It is however reality.
So why?
The evidence strongly points to this:
Between the late 80s and the approximately 1992 the number of vaccinations that newborns received from birth to 18-24 months increased from about 8 to more than 22. In almost all cases the vaccines included Thimerosal as a preservative and stabilizer (Many also included aluminum salts and formaldehyde). Thimerosal is essentially Mercury. Bluntly stated we over injected a whole generation of newborns with one of if not the most toxic brain chemicals known.
I won't bore you with the absolute concentrations, the concentrations relative to body weight and brain mass, developmental stage issues, toddlers hitting the proverbial “brick wall” and developmentally regressing, or how my interest was sparked in this subject. It is true that the Centers for Disease Control, the pediatric profession and the pharmaceutical industry have all consistently and steadfastly denied any connection. Yet none of the naysayers in the aforementioned groups, or in the general medical profession or in the Psychiatric professional ask the question (putting aside ADHD): What has caused this huge increase in what all our prior knowledge determined was a genetic disorder? The failure to publicly ask that question is exactly analogous to the famous lines from a Sherlock Holmes story.
Holmes: Watson, I call your attention to the barking dog.
Watson: But Holmes, the dog did not bark.
Holmes: Exactly
Why all the "experts” deny the correlation (and in my mind causality) and are suspiciously silent about the epedemic aspect to it (compare the silence to the uproar about SARS) is simple. (1) the lawsuits and potential damage claims would dwarf anything that has happened before, tobacco, asbestos you name it. (2) it would greatly harm the national vaccination program which has been an overwhelming success in irradiating many infectious diseases.
Supposedly, since 2002 no childhood vaccinations contain Thimerosal (though it is still in flu vaccines). If the foregoing is correct, you'll start to see a tremendous drop off in this stuff in the next 3-5 years (notwithstanding the innate predispositions of the psychiatric profession to “create” diseases and the innate predispositions of the pharmas to peddle drugs which treat these “diseases.”

p.s. IMO, The characterizations of autism as a genetic disorder is flawed. It is more accurate to characterize autism as a consequence of a greater genetic predisposition to heavy metal poisoning (or conversely a genetic predisposition towards less efficient elimination of heavy metals from the body.) Consequently, depending on the genetic efficiently of heavy metal elimination, symptoms of the poisoning run the gamut of none to classic autism, with the explosion of ADD and ADHD kids (assuming they have been correctly identified as having REAL problems rather than just bad behavior) comprising the vast middle.
p.p.s Heavy metal buildup is now looking more an more likely as the cause of Alzheimer's disease (genetic predisposition caveats apply here as well.)
p.p.p.s There are documented evidence of autism being cured using chealtion therapy - basically heavy metal extration.
