Most or possibly all of the damage happened in the folders part of the database. Jury's still out regarding what can be done about it. I'm also running a "Compute Statistics" job on that particular table right now, which could be causing problems of its own.

I suspect that if we can repair the damage to the folders table or its indexes, most or very likely ALL of the current problems will go away. Nearly ever symptom I've observed (besides the one of not seeing recent messages in my profile) can plausibly be attributed to the folders table.

The worst-case scenario on the folders would be that they'll have to be rebuilt from the copy I've got on the Dev version of the site. I think that copy is currently about 3 days old.

The newest PM I've got in my inbox on the Dev site is dated 3/21/2004 11:03:23 PM, so we know that's the oldest Dev's copy can be. And I don't think it's quite that old.
