Neogen's E. coli Test Adopted by Japanese Food Processors
LANSING, Mich. -- Neogen Corporation (Nasdaq: NEOG) today announced major Japanese food processors have chosen the Company's Reveal for E. coli O157:H7 test for use in their food testing regimen. Neogen's patented E. coli O157:H7 test system, introduced to the food industry over two years ago, is the fastest commercially available test for this deadly organism.
The test, marketed under the tradename Reveal is already being utilized extensively by the fast food industry, major packers, large processors and commercial labs in the U.S. Sales of the test are increasing on a monthly basis due to industry confidence. Neogen's test allows food companies to test for this harmful bacteria, obtain results and release product into commerce within hours.
Japan has experienced serious problems due to the E. coli O157:H7 bacteria, as more than 10,000 people became ill and 12 died last year. Several outbreaks have also been reported this year.
During a recent trip to Japan by Neogen Vice President Ed Bradley, it became obvious that Neogen's technology would be widely adopted in that country, due to the speed, ease of use and accuracy of the test. The price of the test is under $10.00. The Japanese government was influenced by the fact that users of Neogen's Reveal test have never had a product recall, like the 1,200,000 pounds that a major hamburger supplier is currently conducting.
"Our customers can protect the consumer from sickness, and can catch contaminated meat before it leaves the processing plant. No other test can detect the organism this rapidly," said Bradley.
Neogen's Reveal for E. coli O157:H7 test is currently the most rapid test on the market. The test takes 10-15 minutes, after a standard incubation period of eight (8) hours with Neogen's patented media. Other tests on the market have an incubation period of as much as 48 hours.
Neogen President and CEO, James Herbert, announced that the test device, similar to the commonly used home pregnancy test, was recently awarded a patent. Neogen has developed and markets over 140 different test kits for detecting potential food contaminants.
Neogen Corporation is a Lansing, Michigan based company that develops and markets solutions for safety and improved quality in food, agriculture and pharmacologics.
