Farmers forced to kill 700,000 healthy chickens

Saturday, March 27, 2004 - Page A12
Globe and Mail
Vancouver -- Healthy birds are getting too fat for barns in an avian flu control zone, leaving farmers with no choice but to start slaughtering 700,000 perfectly safe chickens next week.

The birds will not be sold for food, but will be rendered. The loss to local processors, who have not been promised any sort of compensation, will be $3-million, an industry spokesman said.

With no sign that restrictions barring the shipment of poultry products outside the Fraser Valley will be eased, that cost is expected to rise. The poultry industry there is getting backed up, with birds outgrowing the barns and chicks continuing to hatch. There is no more commercial freezer space left for processed chicken. CP
