Why Nobody Saw 9/11 Coming
After Clarke's testimony, perhaps that title should be changed. But the body of the article is "good stuff". I saw Perle on Charlie Rose recently, and he still exhibits this mindset. It's not only wrong, but counterproductive. Treating terror as the crime it is, and not adopting some phoney war analogy, will allow more information to be shared on tracking down these shadowy figures. If, and only if, you reach a situation where some state harbors international terrorists, then through the UN, you make that state an international pariah. And, if necessary use military force to change their behavior. So, yes to the surprise to some, I do believe there can be a military component to counterterrorism. I just think the military should be used rarely, as a last resort, and in well defined cases with an exit strategy.
