Clarke was demoted in that most valuable of Washington currency - face time with the President. Now, was he angry purely for the sake of the policies he wanted to push, or for his own pride? You decide. But it's a motive.

Who knows. I think all the talk about motives is a deliberate Bush strategy to (a) change the subject and (b) confuse the public. Since the 9-11 business should not be politics as usual, I find that strategy objectionable, at best.
