What would you have said about a pre-emptive invasion of Afghanistan? It won't work. You can't kill terrorism with bullets. And when the Sept 11th attacks ocurred anyway (it's frankly doubtful that anything Bush could have done would have 'shaken the trees' enough to stop them), would you have been in the chorus of people acussing Bush of "increasing the hate" and triggering the attacks? Yes. Bush's solution to America's dependence on foreign oil is to fight for it. I don't want eighteen year olds fighting for my right to get 11 mpg in a new pickup truck nor do I want to see 3000 people incinerated so I can waste oil. We are fighting the wrong war. He should have at minimum shaken the trees. Did he do ANYTHING in the US?? Rice claims it was an important...urgent? issue for Bush. What did he do prior to 9/11?? Lots of people want more to have been done only after the seriousness of the threat is clear-cut and proven. As you said, by then it's too late...yet, Bush's attempt to apply this argument to Iraq was rejected by the same people now demanding that he should have done more against Al Qaeda in the first few months of his administration. The seriousness of the threat was clear cut and proven after the first attempt to destroy the world trade center. It was clear cut in the seventies when we experienced the first energy crisis. The solution to ME terrorism wrt the US is... Energy Independence.
