RE: Backwards Compatibility.

Emory,

Someone else answered the BIOS question. The BIOS changes are only required for booting off the new drive. I'll just add that AFAIK any BIOS which allows any of the new drives to boot should work for any drive (not just Zip or SyJet or LS-120). I might be wrong on that, though.

Anyway, on backwards compatibility: It's not an issue because PC's *ALREADY* come with a floppy drive. The external LS-120's are about the most stupid idea I've ever seen. Has anyone ever seen a computer (since the 1980's anyway) that doesn't have a 3 1/2" drive? It's cheaper to get the two drives separate, anyway. They make TV/VCR units, but how many of those have you seen? It's better to have them separate so that you can upgrade (or repair) one or the other without having to do both at the same time. The LS-120 is no different.

Where it *DOES* become an issue, however, is with bay space. That's not a problem for most desktop computers, but it might be with notebooks. (That's yet to be seen, however. Neither the LS-120 consortium or Iomega has officially released their laptop versions yet.) I tend to think that laptop users (as long as they have a Zip, CD-ROM, and probably a network connection) have virtually no use for a floppy drive, however. You can always get an external one just in case you need it.

If you want to talk further about Iomega, let's bring this over to the Iomega thread. Just click on my name up above and respond to one of my messages over there.
