Spider-Man 2 Moves to Wednesday
A Rare 'Six-Day Opening Weekend'

March 26, 2004
Sony has changed the opening date for the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2 from July 2nd to June 30th, giving the spandex-clad wall-crawler a rare shot at a six-day opening weekend. With Independence day falling on Sunday this year, many folks will have a Monday holiday, so instead of the now fairly common Wednesday opening resulting in a five-day opening weekend gross, Spider-Man 2's initial tally will be figured over a six-day period. This will allow the film to perhaps match or even surpass the first Spider-Man's stellar total of $114.8 million over three days. Sandwiched right in the middle of Spidey's six-day box office campaign is Free Comic Book Day, July 3 (see "Free Comic Book Day Sponsors Announced")

Meanwhile Sony announced what Marvel had already leaked -- namely that work has already begun on preparations for Spider-Man 3, which is now tentatively set to open in May of 2007. Sony is now talking about turning Spider-Man into a James Bond-type action franchise with six or more Spider-Man films.
