MMA split over martyrdom decree

LAHORE: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has refused to approve the decree regarding the martyrdom of Pakistani troops killed in the Wana operation, saying, “The decree applies to only those who ordered the operation”. “Troops killed in the Wana operation were just following military orders and their Namaz-e-Janaza was according to Islam, while their martyrdom should be left to God,” JUI-F leader Hafiz Hussain Ahmad told Daily Times on Sunday. Mr Ahmad is also the MMA deputy secretary general. MMA sources told Daily Times that the government was pressing the JUI-F to criticise the decree and issue a new one. “The JUI-F leadership had asked many clerics to withdraw the decree, but they refused,” sources said, adding that police had registered cases against the ulema, who had issued the decree. Two MMA components Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and JUI-Sami had approved the decree issued by the 500 Deobandi clerics at a rally in Rawalpindi. “The tribesmen and the mujahideen are martyrs, while Pakistani troops are not because they are operating on US commands,” JI Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmad told a convention in Lahore on March 23. The JI convention also passed the resolution to approve the decree. JUI-S leader Maulana Sami-ul-Haq also approved the decree. Sources said that the JI had shown concern at the JUI-F’s stance, but party head Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that it would not be in MMA’s favour to oppose the army because thousands of their families in the North West Frontier Province and Balochistan, were related to the army and had supported the MMA in election. Sources said that Maulana Rehman had asked his partymen to criticise President Musharraf only during the rallies and not to oppose the army as an institution sources. —Amir Rana
