In recent times, it was Clinton who started the practice of including a member of the Republican Party and gave Mr. Cohen a key Cabinet post, Secretary of Defence. Yes the Repubs reciprocated by Bush inviting Norm Minetta and offered him the not so important post of Secretary of Transportation.

I think it is now time to do so at the Presidential level and once again a Democrat should take the lead. There s no doubt Kerry would be happy to offer the VP to a fellow veteran (we know he has always stood for veterans). But the question is whether McCain would want to break ranks with his fellow Republicans. Come on Sen. McCain, your country comes first, your party after that. Follow in the footsteps of Richard Clarke, another registered Republican who demonstrated that recently.
