Krauthammer has become my favorite columnist. While definitely a man of the right, there is a balance in his observations. Consider this excerpt from his commentary: Look. George W. Bush did not distinguish himself on terrorism in the first eight months of his presidency. Whatever his failings, however, they pale in comparison to those of his predecessor. I personally feel that the White House has badly mishandled its reaction to the Clarke testimony. They have been too defensive. Better to have acknowledged that al Queda was not a major focus prior to 9/11, because it wasn't. The case for Bush revolves around his response to 9/11. No need to be defensive on that issue. I think that it was Lee Hamilton who said, "We suffered a lapse of imagination." The American people are smart enough to understand this. Bush is not going to be blamed for 9/11. Clarke is a puzzle and a disappointment. He should have been an All Star in this administration but he let his ego and personal ambitions distort his perceptions. Unlike Clinton, Bush surrounded himself with a strong foreign policy team. Clarke should have understood he would be playing a secondary role.
