Kerry does knows about war. As President he will have to decide when to go to war not what to do in a war. He would tell the General to have a plan to go in and have a plan to exit. His question about telling someone to be the last man to die in itself speaks of his practical knowledge. It is an insurance.

You talked about Kennedy, Was it a delibrate omission. Cuban missile crisis? Making a decision about war when the world is on the brink is what Kennedy provide the leadership on. A president does not provide leadership on the Bay of Pigs or snapping up the hostages from Iran. Those are best left to the Generals to plan.

Strategy, tactics, logistics, niet for President.
