I posted the Levine (mother) patent that Gemstar holds for DVR functionality here a few years back. It is the reason IMO (not necessarily any IPG patent) that TiVo licensed Gemstar's technology. TiVo does indeed have some proprietary 'PVR' functions however Gemstar now has full IPR to these per the cross-licensing agreement. Gemstar also has its own 'PVR' methodology which, I believe, will be integrated into IPGs. The key here is the DVR functionality, any PVR methodology is a subset.

As far as the TiVo-EchoStar suit, I believe Ergen squashed that with the Gemstar-TV Guide licensing agreement ... I feel fairly certain of this.
