China expects growth to hit at least nine percent in first half

BEIJING: China expects its economy to grow by at least nine percent in the first half of the year, a top statistician said in an interview.

In the second half, policies to cool the economy will kick in so growth for all of 2004 will be closer to eight percent, Qiu Xiaohua, deputy chief if the National Bureau of Statistics, told the Wall Street Journal.

China's economy rose 9.1 percent in 2003 according to official figures, although independent economists put the figure at between 11 and 13 percent.

With industrial growth still in double digits and the agricultural and service sectors rebounding from relatively sluggish performance, that strong growth is continuing into 2004, Qiu said.

The government has officially targetted a much lower growth rate for 2004 of around seven percent, fearing overheating in key sectors of the economy.
