i didn't fight but joined national guard before vietnam and before taking physical for draft or draft notice. thought about joining army and seeing the world but was going to school three nights a week for a degree and felt it would set me back too far so joined up in local guard unit with other neighborhood kids.(poor kids who went to school nights because they didn't have the bucks to go to school days,). we also served on standby alert for three of the last six years. going to drills every other weekend.sometimes from friday night till sunday night. The unit was updated with current military equipment, spent the weekends on the cape( in tents) practing firing guns (105's, rifles, etc.)also helped out in storms, black out and potential racial riots( you were too young for early 60's) and suck up a lot of tear gas in those days.
do not give me any sarcasm about Bush in the national guard. For the first two years of his service he served almost full time learning to fly. He served his country.

you could have done the same thing.
