Dwight:

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see evidence of a material slowdown - read disinterest in Novell's product line.

At the recent Internet Expo in Chicago, Novell had an outrageously large booth/display with the most computers and display materials, etc. Problem was there were NO people stopping by to pay the slightest amount of interest. This isn't a knock on Schmidt, for what brought them to this point was not his doing. Unfortunately, Schmidt has to account for this recent "down time" and my guess is there are too many people who have prematurely jumped on board this thing thinking the train already left the station. Schmidt still has a lot more work to do before that happens.

In the meantime, the joint venture with Netscape does create interesting synergies. This too, will take time. Based on my read of the situation, Netscape has yet to contact any of their VARs about their plans in this area. Prior to this deal, every Netscape server installation would automatically create sales for Microsoft (NT). At least with Novell in the picture, Novell can quite the practice of being forced to feed the enemy just to survive. Also, Netscape's support of Java through their Java script initiative should bode well for Novell longer term.

It all won't unfold very pretty, so be prepared to hang in there. That's all I can say.
